From Spring 2016 through Summer 2018 at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) , Valdez served as the Curator and Director of Public Programs. She proposed, researched, and oversaw 10-12 contemporary art exhibition per year, curated monthly First Friday ICA Live! performances and artist engagement initiatives, and public programs entitled Talking Art. In Talking Art, she created several public programs for art appreciators and artists, such as panel discussions, lectures, portfolio reviews, and artist professional development workshops.

Talking Art is a series of lectures, panel discussions, and public talks aimed at promoting dialogue and conversation about art. It engages artists, students, collectors, and community members through professional development programs and interdisciplinary artist conversations.
