In Conversation: Artists Consider Dorothea Lange; June 18, 2020 at Oakland Museum of California
Learn about the ways in which Dorothea Lange’s photography has inspired and shaped contemporary artists and thinkers with this special digital program. Join Bay Area artist Hung Liu, one of the most prominent Chinese painters working in the United States today, and photographer and videographer, Paul Kitagaki Jr., whose grandparents were photographed by Lange in 1942, in a discussion led by OMCA’s Curator of Photography and Visual Culture Drew Johnson. Learn about Lange’s photographs in the Gallery of California Art as part of a new installation Dorothea Lange: Photography as Activism, meet the artists and gain insight into their artistic practices, and connect with stories from across time and communities.
First virtual public program discussion via Zoom, which included live closed-captions and recording of the program
In Conversation: Artists Consider Dorothea Lange organized by OMCA's Patricia Cariño Valdez was hosted live on Thursday, June 18, 2020.
From 2012-2014, and again in 2018, Valdez collaborated with artists, scientists, donors, and other museum departments to create temporary exhibitions and lecture series for adult audiences at Exploratorium. The Exploratorium helps create joyful, inquiry-based experiences that empower people to ask questions, and confidently understand the world around them. Programs Valdez focused on included:
Pairings: Cultivating a Taste for Science Through Food, which was inspired by the culinary term, pairings, which match complementary or contrasting flavors to create a pleasing complexity. Hosted by Clay Reynolds and Chef Loretta Keller of Seaglass Restaurant, Pairings offers fresh perspectives from a range of scientists, chefs, farmers, vintners, brewers, and others to enhance your exploration of intriguing and edible topics.
In the Balance: Bringing Science to Justice
In a unique collaboration between the Exploratorium and UC Hastings College of the Law, In the Balance examines the numerous, complex, and fascinating issues arising at the intersection of these different systems. From the use of brain imaging to detect lies and assess blameworthiness, to the reliability and validity of forensic science, to the effects of unconscious bias on police officer behavior, the list goes on virtually without end.
Everything Matters: Tales from the Periodic Table
The periodic table outlines the fundamental building blocks of all known matter in the universe. In this Thursday night series, Exploratorium host and scientific raconteur Ron Hipschman guides the audience through the tales of intrigue and invention through dynamic demonstrations where guests uncover fascinating connections between individual elements and our collective experience.
The Science of Cocktails is an annual fundraiser that raised over $200,000 in support of the Exploratorium.
